Mike Smith

I began my D.J. career back in 68 here in Detroit on WDTR 90.9 FM Detroit Public School Radio with a 1 hour weekly show on Wednesday from 3:30 till 4:30 playing the hits of the day working the main board, and controlling everything that went on the air using carts and 45's. This show lasted for 3 years every week during the school year.

In 1980, I went to WDET 101.9 F.M. Wayne State University (sub channel) Detroit Radio Information Service and did a weekly show at night, on Wednesday evening, 8:30 till 10:00 PM called 'Information Please', which was a call in show for and about all disabilities, and putting a positive light on the disability rather then having a pity party (which was something I really hated.) One of my guests on the show was the late great Ernie Harwell, who became a real good friend, and I consider it an honor having known him.

I took that same show to WEXL AM 1340 in 1982 until December of 83 and then I ended my career in broadcasting until I came to the Legend in March of 2013.

During my time off the air, I took my show on the road and did parties and weddings and the bar scene with my D.J. equipment carrying 2 turn tables, 2 cassette decks, and a home stereo system. I did my own wiring and carried 300 cassettes along with 5 containers of 45's and 6 racks of Vinyl. It took a half ton pick up truck to drive me around and a rodey to set me up and I worked under a lot of stressful conditions.

I did my first streaming on the internet back in 2009 and have been streaming ever since.

I have always been some what of an entertainer because I was raised on the carnival performing on a beer show when I was 8 and then again when I was 9, singing in front of about 2000 people at one time.

I also played the violin all during my school years. I was always the lead violin player doing solos and such.

I am the type of guy who can not be told you can't do something because I will either prove them wrong or I just do it but never let it be said that I didn't try, because I have.

Did I ever drive a car? Yes, 2 times with full control of the brakes and steering all while totally blind. Also might I add also under the influence of not such good judgment while drinking.

For recreational purposes, I had the honor of playing Beep Ball 1979-1984 at Tigers Stadium, and have done Cross Country Skiing, and drove a snowmobile (through the woods!)
